When I asked
what brought him satisfaction
He waved his clutching hand
“I own all this and that”
When you have acquired
a property, what then?
“I get another, sometimes two”
And what then?
“Perhaps next time, ten!”
But you don’t own these
properties, I ventured. You merely
get rent from them.
He insisted he owned them
But when I pointed out
that his idea of ownership was
a temporary phenomena
conjured by cunning lawyers
and that one day another person
would claim the same
and after him or her,
they would one day, fade away
well before the pyramids
(though they too
will drift into the sand
on which the stand).
Just in the same way the person
from whom you bought them,
lost them, so too will you.
“Ah hah, I never sell what I’ve bought!”
Will you take them with you?
“What are you talking about?” he said.
You know, when you die?
“Don’t be ridiculous “
But didn’t you say
you no longer have children;
that they just got in the way?
“Well I will leave them to my wife.”
Which one? Didn’t you say you had four?
“I want more and more and more.
But, to be honest, I’m really not sure
what for”.
I believe it was here that I said,
all is owned by the same man
who owns the faraway stars.
And just above the horizon to the west,
amid the plum coloured sky,
glittered 1000 carat diamonds.
At this, I have to confess,
given this heavenly display,
he appeared less depressed.
“How much?”
They’re not for sale.
“Everything is for sale.”
Said this clever complicated man
“I must meet the owner”
Perhaps I can introduce you
to his Son.
So it was, his greed
lead pure and simple,
to the Revelation
that all the while
he had coveted something
worth nothing.
And where he was impatience
to serve himself
he now patiently serves others
and where he had more
he now has less
but joyfully
believes he has
more
This is my story
..more or ..
..less.
