(There is a matter that sometimes stalks my spirit in dark morning hours, and it is always during this yearly ritual where Autumn gives way to Winter when I remember Spring with my little buddy. My apologies to his family.)
ELMER
by GD Martin
Things aren't the same-- He's gone away! "Lord, stop my tears; I mourn, today. Who is to blame? Please tell me, "WHY?"... Chills grip my gut, I miss my fly."
(This is what the buzz is all about):
I met Elmer Fly, one picnic last May; it's when he partook of my cherry parfait. I heard flapping wings,`saw thrashing about; thus, felt the great need to fish the fly out.
"He's just a danged fly", I started to think; I held back my hand-then he jumped to my drink! T'was seconds, or less, I heard a shrill cry, "Please help me! `Can't swim! I fear I shall die!"
I sensed a great choir of angels above, all frowning on me-(`didn't feel too much love)! "A fly's coming home! Make way!", 'swut' they cried; the last words he buzzed: "All's well", then he died.
(The Stephen Foster Hummers, now humming in the background in F minor):
I, now, know "Beyond", there's some little guy who flits all around, and eats cherry pie. One day when I pass, I'll search in my gown...,
to tell him, "I'm sorry...",
"...BUT from now ON, Elmer, Keep your fuzzy, little BODY out of my glass of TEA, You CRUDDY, grimy HOUSEFLY, YOU!!"
Author's Comments: In loving memory, Elmer Fly born March died May

Hello, Sherry, ('Very funny about the garnish), yes, the memory I keep of "Him" will always swarm around inside my brain (a warmed, swarmed memory that began near the marmalade).
You must PM me with your correct mailing address, so that I can resend the returned Christmas card intact and unadulterated (I won't even cheat by opening it first to remember the message I had originally transcribed, inside). The message was very basic, I think, and family-oriented.
It is always a pleasure, Sherry. _Gary

Hey, there, GD! Please allow me to be the lucky one to offer the final condolences of this website in regard to this "tragedy", of which many more I was almost certain were yet forthcoming; and to ask if there was ever an investigation? Slightly entertaining, your sob story, I am ashamed to say, but how you were able to get on with your life is truly the inspiring part. Elmer was so young, and retortedly the inventor of the campaign slogan, "Eat at Joe's Diner. Two Thousand flies can't be wrong." Actually, Elmer had told me that, HIMSELF, when I had first met him just outside the bus station in downtown Dallas, where he was sharing a piece of greem ham with a vagrant socialite, whom was slouched comfortably on a green wooden bench. So, I then decided I would make polite, friendly conversation as long as he was perched NEXT to me; questions such as, "Do you have a place to stay? When did you have your last meal? How long have you been out of work? It was HARD for me to hear all the ANSWERS, 'cause the HOMELESS guy kept trying to talk. But Elmer did manage to mention that he had worked for an ad agency extremely briefly at the age of 22 (days). "Ah, yes", I replied, "Twenty-Two Days. I invented a campaign slogan, TOO, at age twenty-two days", I continued, "HAVE YOU GOT MILK?" I reflected on how, when I was at that tender age, the answers to my slogan (which I had spoken in "Baby") was always the same answer, as it would always come thundering back to me from some distant place, "Not AGAIN. You're sucking me DRY!" But the bus came, and the homeless guy belched and farted, which sent Elmer and I, BOTH, scurrying away in different directions, which was astonishing to me as I began to realize that there are certain things too much for even FLIES to take!
Well, GD, I guess Nonsense is my cup of tea, as WELL!
Take care, (not so much an) Angel

A kind of a blue month and time of the year for me, Maggie, but I have much to be thankful about. I guess GD's preamble to his poem reminded me about MY "little buddy", my son; and that was what inspired many of the words to the song I co wrote with GD. I have always been able to look at the lighter side of situations, and tried to let laughter be good medicine. Thank you for appreciating my humor. I hope you have a joyous holiday season, and I hope the world doesn't allow new age thinking to eradicate completely the very reason for the season. soundclick.com/share?songid=7620527V/R, *Angel
