Sharon Olds, the world-famous poet, told me on Saturday that I should write
about something I hate. As a southern woman I was taught not to hate. It's uncivil, un-Christian,
and not at all polite. I mean, who can hate their own mother, for heaven's sake? Especially
when she was so gracious and kind to everyone but me. Everyone. Everyone. Even dogs. But me.
So I willl not write about hate, because I am a southern woman. A kind Christian civil lady
and I will not write about my mother.

Hi Tina, I like the wry humor in this poem. Even the fragmented sentences work well for the mood and theme. I'm sure many can relate to this poem. There are times when we all felt this way. Thank God it was temporary. Marion

You pull two ends of the candle together and both ends burn exquisitely. There is something to be said about southern local color and tradition that turns so smoothly when transferred to the written word by one that knows and lives the flavor. Nicely turned egg!

Tina, What if you tied the ending back to Olds and poets and writing? And just say:
The poet, Sharon Olds told me on Saturday that I should write about something I hate.
As a southern woman I was taught not to hate; it's uncivil, un-Christian, and not at all polite.
I mean, who can hate their own mother, for heaven's sake? Especially when she was so gracious and kind to everyone
but me. Everyone. Everyone. Even dogs. She was not very kind to me. So I willl not write about hate, because I am
a southern woman. A kind, Christian, civil lady who will not write about her mother with adjectives in play.
Good piece.
Maggie
