Hi all,
Later this week, Jon, Tina Piper, Leo, David, Ron, Rick, Lynn, and Ken and I will begin participating in a month-long discussion of the poems published in Poetry Magazine's April 2008 Translation Issue.
These poems will appear in the Today's Poem thread for your enjoyment, with excerpts from the Translator's Notes which might be pertinent to your reading of the poem.
Below are some highlights from the Discussion Guide for your consideration when reviewing.
After reading a poem aloud, think of a word or phrase or image that stands out.
Is the poem musical, why, why not?
How can the poem be summarized in a brief prose statement or paraphrase?
Does the poem demand the particular form it is presented in?
Do the parts come together?
And...
"Beyond the immediate question of what a particualr poem means, there are other pleasures to consider: textures of sound and cadence, the vividness of images, and the general suggestiveness of words and phrases."
Enjoy the readings.
Maggie
