long ago I sought
your power at my side
an equal I can hold to swim
the place that tastes of greedy liquor
where subtle movements curve
and hunger turns your body
wilds you into joy and out
of mind
these days we drink each other
clean with ease
you go down in peppered droughts
slip raw drips across my eyes
hang before me dangled hard
eager to be soundly pleased
you’re the kind who only rhymes in secret
way back when I finally did
find your faltering life-force
on that day you reached for me
you were drowning toxic memories
of bloody wrists stiff-cuffed tight behind
shaking legs splayed out and dry
eyes a haunt of red spider-traced
tracks inflamed with scratching pain
you were almost blind
baby-raped repeatedly then as a child too
it’s true your heart did grow with you
but every day I watch its contents
damned near erase
that is how your mind survived
and how it lives today
how cautiously I first lifted you
seventeen years ago
when you were thirty-nine
have held you to my lips ever since
and still your horror aches down mine
never have I let you go
over and over again
this mantra of my own
ruptured anguish whispers:
