Juanita
There was a pastoral simplicity to Person County, close to Hurdle’s Mill, a salt-of-earth regard for family, and a specific patch of land to till.
You made your start there, on a rustic farm, Beside the widely-rowed tobacco fields, A place of timelessness; unvarnished charm; And the concerns of droughts and meager yields.
Your modest youth was rich; it taught you how To brook the chasm of the Great Depression Without the favor money can endow, But with a much more valuable possession:
The knowledge that a fiercely earnest soul And a good name is something you respect (Like how you baked the perfect dinner roll), And having friends is something you protect.
You left to marry, but the country life Provided the components of your heart, The kind of heart a mother and a wife could form a masterpiece of every part.
The end has come. Well done, Juanita. Rest, And let your qualities enrich the earth As we intone, “Praise God, the land is blessed!” Because the world is better for your birth. *
*my Dad's sister is in her final hours and my cousin asked me to write a poem for the program and the funeral. It tends more towards cliche than I prefer, but with weddings and funerals you write for the intended audience, so I'm putting my disclaimer on that side of things. (The dinner roll line is a homage to her baking abilities, and most of the attendees will have experienced that). Thanks. Just wanted to explain.

With the exception of the final line, I find not a breath of cliche. This poem touched me. I felt Juanita. She was real to me. She was undistanced by language (which sometimes happens in the effort for meter and rhyme) and I think I even love her a little bit, all the way from out here in California.

Thank you, Lynn. I'm glad there was less cliche than I had feared.

To Lynn's point, does:
because your life shook the earth with joy and mirth
work? One stress too many but something like that.

Thanks, Leo. Yes, I need to find something else there. I appreciate the suggestion.

precious David, here are several verses from PROVERBS 31:
25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
much love, michael

David, I'm so sorry for your loss... these lines here are just beautiful:
"Rest, And let your qualities enrich the earth As we intone, “Praise God, the land is blessed!” "
Absolutely lovely image. and a lovely tribute.
