Psalm of the Sikh

If I were true to myself, remaining selfless
would be easy. The length of my shanks
would be endless long without axis;

soon enough, becoming a wobbly man on stilts.

All the clowns of Christendom would frolic at my feet.

And though I hollered down, far and wide,
my spindles for release, you would never
hear what I have felt, nor the self I seek.

Better not to be myself, stumble
on my knobblies, scrape the earth’s
uneven chest, and mock myself
without regret for entertaining
sceptic hobbies, unbecoming

to a child of heaven.
